Which Trading Strategies Work Better Amidst the Market Volatility?

The much anticipated annual POEMS Stock Challenge Game 2007, organised by PhillipCapital’s online trading platform - Phillip’s On-line Electronic Mart System (POEMS) - is now open for registration. From now till 23 September 2007, students of all the four local universities, namely the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), are able to register for the Game on http://shares.poems.com.sg for free.
2. In its fourth year running, this intervarsity online stock trading competition received favourable response for past years. Last year, we received a total of 2,000 registrations, with majority of students hailing from Business Administration and Banking & Finance faculties. Interestingly, we also have participants from other disciplines such as Computer Science, Engineering, Arts and Biotechnology. With the hype on the stock market now, POEMS aims to receive 40% more registrations this year.
3. At the start of this simulation game, participants are given virtual cash of $80,000 to trade any of the stocks listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Early birds who register before 9 September 2007 will be given additional $20,000 virtual cash. To make it more challenging, at least 20% of the Total Realised Profits – profits earned from trading - must be earned from investing in any of the 50 STI component stocks. Winners from both individual and team categories with the highest Total Realised Profits will walk away with cash incentives totalling $6,000.
4. “POEMS Stock Challenge Game enables students to experience the excitement and intrigue of the stock market without risking any real money. Other than allowing them to gain valuable stocktrading
experience, it also provides a platform for them to test their judgment and analytical skills. With this experience, they will then gain basic stock investment knowledge to become savvy investors in the future,” quipped Mr George Kwok, Manager of POEMS Marketing.
5. Before the game starts on 10 September 2007, POEMS will be organising several seminars on the universities’ campuses to equip interested students with basic trading knowledge. Experienced trading representatives from Phillip Securities Pte Ltd, a member of PhillipCapital, will be present to share their experiences and some techniques. The game will end on 19 October 2007.
